Cheetahs still looking for redemption

- Rudolph Jacobs

A sign of the times for the embattled Cheetahs was the fact that only two of their players were included in the Springbok squad this week.

The beleaguered Cheetahs are trying to win their first Super Rugby game today against the Sunwolves in Tokyo since round three when they beat the same team at home.

Only wing Raymond Rhule and flank Oupa Mohoje were included in the Springbok squad, but at least they have three more in the SA A side – flank Uzair Cassiem, prop Ox Nche and centre Francois Venter.

Coach Franco Smith (above) remained quite diplomatic on the uncertainty lingering over the franchise’s future.

“We have had six games in a row of which five were New Zealand opposition and one was against the Bulls, who were also a physical side. Physically they were both demanding matches,” said Smith.

“So this seven-week run we knew from the beginning of the year would be tough.”

Starting their first three games at home they were edged 28-25 by the Lions, but then they beat the Bulls 34-28 and the Sunwolves 3831, which was their last win.

Then followed nine straight shattering defeats – 41-14 to the Jaguares, 38-30 to the Sharks, 5310 to the Stormers, 41-27 to the Chiefs, 20-14 to the Bulls, 48-21 to the Crusaders, 45-41 to the Highlanders, 50-32 to the Blues and 61-7 to the Hurricanes.

“Obviously one wants to win your games and it leads to frustration,” said Smith.

“And there was no ‘comments column’ on our games saying ‘yes but if this or if that’.”

Smit said it was unbelieveable how much belief the guys still have and wanting to prove they are still good enough.

“We put the pressure every week to one side and try to perform as well as we can,” the coach said.

“And I’m sure the guys go out with all that they can to get that big win we are searching for.”
