Four problems with the Springbok squad

I have a feeling – and I hope I’m wrong– that quotas have again had a role to play in selections, writes from Germiston.

As an armchair critic, I have four concerns regarding the Springbok squad. Firstly, Frans Steyn plays at fullback and centre for Montpellier, not flyhalf.

He has not really set France alight and has been pulled up for foul play on numerous occasions, as well as unsportsmanlike behaviour. He is far too tempera- mental and is already nearing 30. Really, not an asset.

Secondly, “Toetie” seems to be obsessed with Damian de Allende, who has not come up to scratch for two years. There are far better centres.

Thirdly, Rudy Paige definitely does not deserve his place in the squad. He has been mediocre to say the least.

Faf de Klerk, in last week’s game, brought fresh impetus to the game when he came on. He even took a ball in the lineout which completely bamboozled the Bulls – a masterpiece. I cannot see how “Toetie” can discard this dynamic player.

Fourthly, Duane Vermeulen. Duane is a fine crash-ball player but has not reached great heights this season for Toulon, and is already 31.

Kwagga Smith, who is not even in the A side, has been outstanding. So, too, Ruan Ackermann. Chris Cloete, in the A side is a gem.

I have the feeling – and I hope I’m wrong – that quotas have again had a role to play in the squad’s selections. We need young, dynamic players prepared to put their bodies on the line for the Bok jersey.
