MEC lashes out at reckless Gauteng taxi drivers

-

Gauteng MEC for community safety Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane yesterday condemned the reckless driving and conduct by taxi drivers on Gauteng roads.

This follows a video doing the rounds on social media in which taxi drivers are seen racing in Kyalami, north of Joburg, as passengers scream for help.

However, one social media user said the incident was not a drag race between two taxi drivers but that one taxi driver was trying to “run away” after being chased because he was using a route that was not his.

Nkosi-Malobane called on motorists, particularly public transport operators, to exercise caution and make road safety a priority.

“I am deeply angry and shocked at the reckless driving and conduct by our taxi drivers on Gauteng roads. I condemn these childish acts in strong and harshest terms,” Nkosi-Malobane said.

“Despite various road safety measures in place, Gauteng roads continue to experience growing incidents of reckless driving, resulting in fatal crashes.

“The safety of our passengers within our public transport system remains a priority to law enforcement agencies.”

Nkosi-Malobane said she would ensure that law enforcement agencies worked around the clock to investigate the matter and ensure that the culprits were charged with reckless and negligent driving. – ANA
