Man shot in apparent planned hit in Sandton

-

Mystery surrounds the death of a man gunned down in lunchtime traffic in Sandton yesterday in a killing with all the hallmarks of an organised hit.

A number of gunmen opened fire on a luxury R3 million Bentley coupe as it was going along Bowling Avenue in Sandton.

The car veered out of control, ramping onto the pavement before smashing against a lamp post and coming to a halt.

The gunmen, who were believed to be in a white Audi, then drove off in the direction of Alexandra.

When paramedics from ER24 arrived on the scene at about 12.15pm, they found a man, believed to be 37 years old, slumped in the front seat of the luxury vehicle.

Russel Meiring, ER24 spokesperson, said: “Paramedics assessed the man and found that he had sustained numerous gunshot wounds and showed no signs of life.

“Unfortunately, nothing could be done and he was declared dead on the scene.”

Bowling Avenue was cordoned off from the BP petrol station towards Marlboro and Alexandra, causing a traffic back-up for some distance.

Colonel Lungelo Dlamini, provincial spokesperson for the SA Police Service, said: “The victim was coming from the bank when he was attacked by four suspects and it is unclear at this time if any money was stolen from the scene. “It is forming part of the investigation.”

The victim’s next of kin arrived at the scene some time after the shooting. Police have launched a manhunt for the shooters. – Caxton News Service
