Consumer inflation rises

South Africa’s headline consumer inflation rose slightly more than expected to 5.4% year-on-year in May from 5.3% in April, data from Statistics SA showed yesterday, further weakening the rand.

On a month-on-month basis inflation was also higher at 0.3% in May from 0.1%.

Core inflation was flat at 4.8% year-on-year in May.
