Secret Captain to close out meeting

- Jack Milner

How much money people will have in their wallets by the time they reach Race 12 is uncertain. But for some the Listed Daisy Business Solutions Handicap over 1600m on the turf will a way of spending some of their winnings and for others it is the getting-out stakes.

It is a handicap and is very competitive but perhaps, whatever the fate of Ten Gun Salute and Saratoga Dancer in the Vodacom Durban July, trainer Duncan Howells can go home with a winner.

He saddles Secret Captain and this half-brother to Bela-Bela is overdue a second career win.

He won on debut over 1200m and looked set for a big future.

But although placing regularly has failed to win another race.

He ran a 1.75-length second to Janoobi in the Grade 2 Daisy Guineas but then finished a disappointing fourth behind Crowd Pleaser over 1800m on the Polytrack and then faded out after leading the Daily News field when trying blinkers for the first time.

The blinkers are off, he’s back to 1600m and with just 52kg on his back this could be Secret Captain’s race.

An interesting runner at a big price is Irish Pride.

He has twice beaten Highveld Horse-Of-The-Season Rafeef and has raced against a lot better than he meets in this event.

Unfortunately he has not raced since winning the Listed Wolf Power 1600 in February.

If fit and well he could take a power of beating. Gavin Lerena rides.

Nebula is a reserve runner for the Durban July but if he does run in this event he needs to be included in all exotics.

Trainer Brett Crawford actually rates his charge with a chance if her gets a July run so he has to be considered a lively contender in this field.

Betting World have priced him up at 16-10 despite a wide draw.
