Dr Mugford at Wodac

-

Marltons, a leading South African pet care firm, is bringing internationally renowned animal behaviourist and expert animal psychologist Dr Roger Mugford to South Africa for this year’s World of Dogs & Cats (Wodac) & Pet Expo at the Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand from July 14 to 16.

Dr Mugford, Britain’s leading animal behaviourist, is the founder of the Animal Behaviour Centre in Surrey, UK.

He is also a prolific author, educator and animal welfare advocate, and trainer of the queen’s corgis.

Under his The Company of Animals brand, he has invented and developed a range of products that have revolutionised the way people train their pets, including the HALTI canine head collar and harness, and the Pet Corrector auditory training tool.

Dr Mugford and his team have been successfully resolving animal behaviour challenges for over 30 years. According to them, many problems such as aggression, phobias, fearfulness and destructive behaviour could be due to a misunderstanding between dog and owner, a lack of appropriate socialisation/habituation or even due to physical problems which may not be apparent to the owner.

The Company of Animals also offers dog owners basic dog training tips and Dr Mugford’s book The Perfect Dog to help make dog ownership a joy rath- er than a chore. “Investing the time to understand how your dog learns and what motivates him to behave the way he does is the first step to teaching him to behave in an appropriate fashion.”

The Mugford Method, based on the latest research, holds that it’s okay to treat your dog as you would a human member of the family, rewarding desired or appropriate behaviour, but using well-timed negative experiences to interrupt or discourage unwanted behaviours.

Dr Mugford will give talks at Wodac twice daily throughout the three days of the show, giving pet owners an opportunity to discover the common underlying causes of pet behavioural problems and how to address them. Friday 14 July: 12h00 and 14h15 Saturday 15 July: 12h00 and 14h00 Sunday 16 July: 12h00 and 14h15

Wodac Pet Expo, which promotes responsible pet ownership, will feature champion animals, scores of demonstrations and a huge range of pet products. Wodac is South Africa’s largest pet expo.
