The Citizen (KZN)

Rules and regulations necessary at our schools

-

Reading the Saturday Citizen on July 29 left me more than a trifle bemused. In the Letters section the letter from Richard raises a few questions.

I spent the final 25 years of my working life employed by a school in Johannesburg, not, I must add, in an academic capacity.

Having worked daily with aca- demics and students, I am confident that I know a little more than Richard about the requirements needed to bring out the best in the students.

I believe that uniforms are a must to assist all students to feel equal, no showing off with “name” clothes.

Rules and regulations are necessary in every walk of life or mayhem and pandemonium will become the order of the day.

Most schools today have some form of liaison committee between staff, students and the parents of students.

Richard’s comment that “the pupils’ input, insight, expertise, experience and knowledge will be invaluable to the beleaguered hierarchy” suggest that the students have more experience of all things, academic and of life in general, than their teachers!

Are we to accept that all children are wise enough to make every decision without any adult guidance? I think not!

Could somebody please advise me on which planet Richard is a resident?
