FNB tragedy overshadows Chiefs’ victory

- Tshepo Ntsoelengoe

There was a sombre mood at the end of the Carling Black Label Cup match between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates following the deaths of two fans, while many were injured prior to the start of the match at the FNB Stadium on Saturday.

The game ended with Chiefs lifting a pre-season trophy with a 1-0 victory courtesy of a strike by Bernard Parker (right) early in the first half.

During the post-match interviews, coaches Steve Komphela and Kjell Jonevret sent their condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and wished a speedy recovery to the injured supporters.

Chiefs dominated the most part of the encounter and Komphela was content with his players, particularly with his back four for remaining solid at the back as the Buccaneers gained some momentum in the second half with their substitutes which included their new signings Thamsanqa Gabuza and Musa Nyatama.

“We send our deepest condolences to the souls that were lost this afternoon and we wish speedy recovery to those who are injured,” Komphela continued.

“We managed to control, dictate and dominate even though I thought we could have scored more.

“I am happy with the general performance. Clean sheet, good discipline and good structure.”

Pirates coach Jonveret, meanwhile, was disappointed with the loss and added that there would be several changes when the new campaign started.

“We heard about the tragedy after the game,” Jonevret added.

“We wanted to give so much more to our supporters, but this is football. But at the same time we were a little bit lucky, there could have been more goals and Chiefs played well.”

“I was happy to see other guys who didn’t play too much last season, they showed great energy. There is always a chance for the players when the new season starts,” he said.
