Parliament pays tribute to ANC MP
KHOZA PRAISED FOR SERVICE COMMITMENT One portfolio committee member killed, three injured in Paarl car crash.
Parliament’s presiding officers yesterday sent condolences to the family and friends of ANC MP Timothy Khoza, who died in a car accident during an oversight visit to schools in the Paarl region.
Three fellow MPs and members of parliament’s portfolio committee on basic education – Nomalungelo Gina, Ian Ollis and Cynthia Majeke – were seriously hurt in the accident.
While visiting them in hospital, Deputy Speaker Lechesa Tsenoli said: “We convey our deepest condolences to the family of comrade Khoza, the African National Congress, as well as his fellow members and staff who worked with him.
“I have seen the three members and feel confident they will recover from their shocking accident,” Tsenoli said.
“They have already received examinations by doctors and, while still shocked, they are glad they are alive.
“Their ordeal is unbelievable,” Tsenoli added.
He thanked provincial officials, chief whips from parties and hospital staff for the support they were providing to the three who were injured. The presiding officers collectively paid tribute to Khoza’s dedication to serving fellow South Africans.
“Mr Khoza was known amongst his colleagues in parliament as a devoted public representative with untiring commitment and dedication to the service of the people,” Speaker Baleka Mbete’s office said.
“Our thoughts and prayers are also with the three injured MPs and the occupants of the other vehicle involved in the crash for their speedy recovery,” the speaker’s office said. – ANA
