Philani hungry for cup success

CHIEFS’ NEW SIGNING SAYS LOSING NOT AN OPTION Zulu now has to prove he’s worthy of donning the shirt.

Kaizer Chiefs’ new signing Philani Zulu has declared that he wants to help the team retain its image by helping them win some silverware. The versatile 24-year-old former Maritzburg United player joined in June and could make his official debut when Amakhosi host SuperSport United at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban in an MTN8 first-round fixture tonight (8.15pm).

“Above all I want to help the team win silverware,” declared Zulu yesterday on the club’s website. He also added that he is a born winner and losing is not an option.

“I hate losing. I always want to win in whatever I do and that is why I am so grateful to be at a club like Chiefs who like winning trophies. We both like winning and it is embedded in our DNA,” he said.

These words will win Zulu plenty of admirers among the Amakhosi supporters who are hungry for success. But he will have to do more than just declare his desire and let his feet do the talking for the supporters to be convinced that he is worthy to don the famous gold and black colours of the Glamour Boys.

Zulu’s signing was questionable, especially after he spent his last season at Maritzburg training on his own after the team banned him after he refused to sign a contract extension. “I want to add value to Chiefs – on and off the field,” he said.

Zulu can play both as a leftback and winger and said he models his game on former Manchester United leftback Patrice Evra.

“The confidence he showed on the field is something I picked up on and try to apply in my own game,” he said.

If he gets a start, Zulu is set to have a hard night trying to keep Matsatsantsa’s pacy attackers at bay at the venue where they won the Nedbank Cup by beating Orlando Pirates 4-1 in June.
