Muzi: ‘We did nothing wrong’

- Jack Milner

Muzi Yeni was never charged with anything by the authorities in Mauritius and feels all the experience did was place a stain on his reputation.

“We did nothing wrong,” said Yeni in an interview with Julie Alexander which will be shown this Sunday on Breeding To Win.

“I was kept away from my family, damaged my reputation and financially left me in a bad way.”

“I arrived in Mauritius on the Thursday and a day later Raymond (Danielson) asked me if I would like to join them to go fishing on a catamaran.

“I wasn’t there long enough to get involved with bookmakers or anything like that.

Yeni was planning to leave the island after he and trainer Ricky Maingard parted company and he spent a couple of days before the Durban July sorting out his taxes.

He then discovered his Facebook page had been hacked and reported this to the racing authorities.

“They held an inquiry in which I was cleared but they told me to go to the police to report it. They started an investigation into that and they kept me waiting. It was during that period the story broke about the boat trip.“

While that was being investigated Yeni was told he was told he could not leave.

“I was really upset because that meant I was going to miss the Durban July meeting.”

Yeni thanked a number of people who had helped him, among them Larry Wainstein from the Racing Association. “He knew a lot of people in Mauritius and was trying his best to help wherever he could,” said Yeni.
