Chiefs’ chance for revenge against SuperSport

- Jonty Mark

Kaizer Chiefs leftback Tsepo Masilela (left) says he understands their supporters’ concerns, with Amakhosi making another unconvincing start to a Premier Soccer League season.

Chiefs’ trophy drought under Steve Komphela has been welldocumented and the side have not shown any sign yet that this season will be different from the last two, losing in the MTN8 quarterfinals to SuperSport United, and starting their league campaign on Sunday with a 1-1 draw at Bloemfontein Celtic.

Chiefs’ next chance comes tomorrow, when they face SuperSport again in the Absa Premiership at FNB Stadium.

“To be out of the MTN8 is a big loss for us, last season we also went out in the first game and we wanted to go further,” said Masilela yesterday at Chiefs training.

“And obviously we haven’t won anything for two seasons so I wouldn’t blame the fans for being worried. But we are only two games into this season.

“We know what we have and haven’t done and what we want to do … we know how the past two seasons went and we are trying our best to win trophies for the team, for fans, for everyone.

“I think it is a question of confidence. When you don’t win, the confidence goes down, but as soon as you break the ice and win, you go on a good run, so hopefully we will get the win.”

Chiefs had their chances against SuperSport in the MTN8, hitting the woodwork three times, with Jeremy Brockie’s early goal proving the winner.

“They didn’t create much, they just got once chance and buried it. If we can keep it tight at the back we have a chance of winning. They are not an easy team to break down, they sit deep and defend well … and that Brockie is always scoring against us!” added Masilela.

Kaizer Chiefs coach Steven Komphela, meanwhile, said he expects to have both Itumeleng Khune and George Maluleka available tomorrow.
