City will dig deeper

WE HAVE TO KEEP FOCUSING AND GIVE EVERYTHING IN EVERY GAME Cape Town City are carrying on their good form from last season.

Cape Town City defender Thamsanqa Mkhize says they are not ready to give up their 100% win record, and that the growing support the team have had in recent times serves as a motivation for the players to dig even deeper.

“We understand people like winners,” Mkhize told Phakaaathi yesterday. “Our success is what has made us popular and the growing number of people who pledge their support for us is motivation for us. We want to keep them happy. The only way to do that is by winning,” he added.

Fresh from an admirable 3-1 aggregate win over Bidvest Wits in the MTN8 semifinals, City will host embattled Kaizer Chiefs in an Absa Premiership match at Cape Town Stadium tomorrow night.

Amakhosi go into the match limping following a recent run of poor results which has put the spotlight back on their coach Steve Komphela. Mkhize said they are aware of how dangerous Amakhosi are and said their recent results will mean nothing.

“Let’s be honest, we must never forget that Chiefs are a big club and their coach will always be under pressure. The team will always be dangerous nonetheless. Their previous results mean nothing especially because they have been playing well, just that the results have not been coming for them. We would be doing ourselves a disservice if we put too much focus on their recent results,” said Mkhize.

The 29-year-old rightback said keeping their winning momentum and collecting as many points as they can early on is what will help them achieve their goals.

“Reaching the (MTN8) final is an achievement and it shows we are still going in the right direction towards reaching our goals.

“What helps us is that we are united and our team spirit is high and we are always ready to fight for each other.

“It is however important we don’t get over-confident. We have to keep focusing and give everything in every game.

“Our main goal is to win as many cups as we can, and also challenge for the league title.”
