THOUSANDS OF ENTRIES EXPECTED

-

Calling all cycling enthusiasts, entries for the 34th Carnival City Macsteel National Classic on October 28 and 29 are now open. Enter online at cycleevents. co.za before October 16.

This popular event will follow the same format as last year, starting with a mountain bike race on October 28, followed by the road race the following day.

The event will be held three weeks before the Telkom 947 Cycle Challenge.

The Carnival City Macsteel National Classic is a Cycling South Africa-sanctioned event that attracts thousands of entries every year. It is also a seeding event for the 2018 Cape Cycle Tour.

Both events start and finish at Carnival City, where there is plenty of secure parking, a wide selection of restaurants and fast-food outlets and activities for children.

The event comprises a 60km and 34km mountain bike race, as well as two short mountain bike races of 12km and 6km and kids’ mountain bike races of 3km and 1km.

The customary route for the 103km and 65km road races will remain.

The elite and under-23 men, juniors and licensed vets (VA, VB and VC) will race over 125km.

The entry fees are R220, R180 and R50 for the mountain bike races, while fees for the road races are R340 for the 125km, R320 for the 103km, and R230 for the 65km races. All races will be timed by RaceTec.

All cyclists, including licensed riders, are required to make use of a RaceTec Chip. Those cyclists who do not have a chip can purchase one with their entry.

Race organisers receive no financial benefit from this event and all proceeds will go to Rotary Community Projects, the Rotary Foundation, Germiston Wheelers Charity Projects and the development of amateur cycling in South Africa.

“We are excited to once again support and play host to the Carnival City Macsteel National Classic Cycle Race,” said Carnival City’s marketing manager, Michelle Smith. “This is a popular event in and it is fantastic to see how support for the race grows each year. If you aren’t entering the race, bring your family down to Carnival City to watch the cyclists cross the finish line.”
