STEVE: KEEP IT UP

- Sibongiseni Gumbi

Kaizer Chiefs coach Steve Komphela wants his team to continue playing with the same commitment they displayed in the midweek league win over Cape Town City.

Amakhosi finally got the monkey off their back as they earned their first win of their opening three Absa Premiership matches to ease the pressure on Komphela.

The Glamour Boys gave a fine performance against a City side who had not lost in five matches.

“All the teams have just played three games. There is still a lot of football to be played,” said Komphela in his post-match interview.

“We had energy, commitment and clarity in everything we did today. If we can carry on like this, God willing, we will celebrate,” said Komphela.

Chiefs will host an out-of-sorts Bidvest Wits at FNB Stadium tomorrow night and Komphela will hope for more of the same. Wits have got their Premiership title defence off to a poor start, picking up just one point out of a possible nine and will be looking to turn things around.

The coach said the trying start to the season had proved to be a blessing in disguise for his team as it brought along with it some valuable lessons.

“The challenges we had brought us a lot of blessings. In football you learn after being hurt, unlike in school where you learn first and try not to get hurt. Such lessons have left us wiser,” he said.

Komphela also acknowledged the supporters’ frustrations with the team’s dismal start – they were also knocked out in the first round of the MTN8 – and said he understood where their calls for changes in the team came from.

“To whom much is given, much is expected. This is a big club. They (fans) don’t get mad with us because of hatred, it is purely because of the love they have for this club,” he said.
