Sharks aiming for inside lane

- Ken Borland

The Sharks travel to Kimberley for tonight’s Currie Cup match against Griquas looking to continue their winning run this season as well as their good record that has seen them lose to the Northern Cape side just once in their last six meetings.

Current form is strongly on the visitors’ side with seven successive victories carrying the Sharks to a comfortable lead at the top of the standings, while Griquas are struggling to get off the bottom after crashing to four successive defeats.

The Sharks will be eager to convert those numerical advantages into a bonus point win, which will enable them to return to Durban in the inside lane when it comes to topping the table, as their last three games will be played at their home ground.

Coach Robert du Preez (above) has warned though that Griquas are a dangerous side and that the level of performance thus far by the Sharks is not going to be good enough to win the Currie Cup for the first time since 2013.

“We can’t think too far ahead because this is a really important game. Our performance last weekend against the Pumas wasn’t great, but we got the win. We need to execute better.

“Griquas are a very capable side, especially there. They have abrasive forwards like the Pumas and they like to throw the ball around at the back.

“We know we’re a good team and if we keep this squad together, and with certain players back from Japan, I think we will do well in the future. But what this union deserves is trophies,” Du Preez said.
