Hurricane Lass, Ali Bon Dubai are runners worth following

- Jack Milner

One of the most important features of any race meeting for punters is what we learn from it and who can we back next time. Two horses stand out after Saturday’s Turffontein meeting – Hurricane Lass and Ali Bon Dubai.

There was a lot of support for Mike de Kock-trained Hurricane Lass in Race 2, who was having her first race around the turn and over 1600m. She was almost joint favourite with Serendipity at one stage, however, she drifted slightly and by the time they were released from the pens she was at 17-10 with Serendipity at 14-10.

Weichong Marwing took Hurricane Lass to the front and it took a while before Serendipity and Piere Strydom started to challenge. The two were well clear of the opposition and eventually Serendipity got the upper hand and went on to win by 0.30 lengths.

However, when the head-on picture was produced it was clear Marwing’s mount tended to hang out towards her rival and the jockey battled to keep her straight.

She will have benefitted from this run and next time out it will take a good one to beat Hurricane Lass.

Perhaps the most amazing run of the day came in Race 9 where Ali Bon Dubai, who went off at 4-1, lost ground at the start and ended up at the back of a well strung-out field.

However, once in the straight this Geoff Woodruff-trained runner made up the ground, even though jockey Callan Murray had to weave him through the field.

“I wanted to go out but I couldn’t move so I had to take my chances.” said Murray.

“He missed the break heftily and we were far back. Luckily they went very fast and he just took off.

?? ?? AMAZING RUN. Ali Bon Dubai showed his supporters how to win a race the hard way - and gave them some anxious moments.
