Gauteng ready for matric exams, says Lesufi

Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi said yesterday that a total of 150 090 pupils would be writing the 2017 final National Senior Certificate exams in the province.

“A total of 150 090 candidates have enrolled to write the exams, including 108 594 full-time and 41 496 part-time candidates. The number of progressed pupils in 2017 stands at 12 927,” Lesufi said.

Lesufi said that the 2017 final National Senior Certificate exams would commence on October 23 and conclude on November 28, 2017.

“This will mark the 10th anniversary since the inception of the National Senior Certificate (NSC). The class of 2017 will be fourth cohort to write the CAPS-aligned NSC exams,” the MEC added.

“The minister of basic education will release the results on the January 4, 2018 and MECs for education will release provincial results on January 5, 2018.”

The education department in the province said they were ready to conduct the examinations and would ensure that they proceeded without major irregularities.

“These examinations will be conducted in 881 exam centres across Gauteng. We plan to improve our performance compared to the 2016 results,” the department stated.

Lesufi said that various steps were taken to ensure pupils were prepared for their exam, which included extra lessons through the Secondary Schools Improvement Programme. – ANA
