It should come as a big relief for Kaizer Chiefs that goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune has been declared fit after suffering what looked to be a serious head injury in the Absa Premiership goalless draw against Golden Arrows at the FNB Stadium on Saturday night.

Khune fell awkwardly on his head and had to be stretchered off, with Edmore Chirambandare having to take his place as coach Steve Komphela had made all their allocated substitutions. There was a fear that the injury might be bad and keep him out for a while.

But the team have since announced that he is fine and should be available for selection on Saturday when they host Baroka FC at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban.

“Khune fell heavily on his head. He had a sore neck and a headache from the clash. We took him to hospital where he was examined. Accordingly, he was cleared of danger.

“He will undergo a series of checks and rehabilitation but he should be ready for the next match,” said team medic Dr Hashendra Ramjee.

Khune was again at his best on Saturday, pulling off unbelievable saves to keep Amakhosi in the hunt as Abafana Bes’thende kept probing.

Abafana Bes’thende coach Clinton Larsen was happy with the return of one point for his team considering they were playing away. Larsen said his team were on the road for their past two matches and managed to return home with four points.

“We did fairly well considering that we don’t have the depth so we can’t bring in changes as we’d like. The boys have had a hectic schedule and it is now taking its toll on the legs.

“I am happy they gave maximum effort. We will take the point. We went to two away games and returned with four points and that is good return,” said Larsen, who had high praise for his own goalkeeper, Nkosingiphile Gumede.

“It is amazing to see how he has progressed. At just 23 his best years are still ahead of him but he is already doing amazingly well and we are happy to have him in the team,” added the Arrows head coach.
