‘We’re hurting, but we care’

– Renowned ball scavenger-flank Francois Louw (right) has been in the Springbok set-up long enough to know when the camp are hurting.

Having had to dissect the massive 57-0 defeat to the All Blacks two weeks ago, Louw hopes to play a big part in a Bok renaissance in the Rugby Championship clash this afternoon against the Wallabies.

“There’s always pressure coming into the Springbok set-up, high expectancy for us to win as a team, especially in the Championship,” he said.

“The guys are hurting, which is a good sign because it shows they care.”

Louw, who has played 52 Tests, joined the team from Bath this week and looking in from the outside, he said he could feel the urgency this week a mile away.

“Obviously the guys had a tough tour, drawing against Australia, followed by a big loss to the All Blacks, so there’s pressure to bounce back and to do well and to get a win under the belt.

“We need to turn things around and the focus has been on that very much this week,” he said.

Louw had high praise for the injured Jaco Kriel whose high workrate was missed against New Zealand.

“Jaco is a great player, but I think we play a bit of a different game to be honest,” he said.

“We’ve all got our strengths and weaknesses. He has been fantastic for the Boks no doubt, and he is a solid guy.”

Louw believes Kriel will be a Bok regular for many years to come.

“A lot of guys get a few games but then disappear from the scene.

“But he has taken his opportunity and has done really well. A big loss for us as a side, he doesn’t often go back in the tackle,” said Louw.
