Makola: Micho’s bringing confidence back
Orlando Pirates midfielder Mpho Makola (right) has attributed new coach Micho Sredojovic’s positive start to the season to his good understanding of the club, having taken charge of the Soweto giants back in 2006/2007 season before.
In his third month since being appointed the new Bucs coach, Micho has overseen three wins, two draws and a defeat. Pirates have 11 points, putting the club into third place in the Absa Premiership.
With such a decent opening to the new campaign, Makola says the Serb has instilled confidence into the players, something Sredojevic outlined when he said he would work on bringing back the happy days at the Buccaneers after his arrival.
“The coach has been here before, so he understands the culture of Orlando Pirates’ players. And he also understands how we play. He has brought change, but most importantly he has given self-belief and confidence to the players again. I think everybody is happy and excited to work with him,” said the 31-year old Alexandra-born midfielder.
Makola made 33 appearances for the club in all competitions last season, scoring three goals and making nine assists. So far this season, the midfielder has made five appearances with only one assist and has yet to score.
He admits he has begun the season on a good note, but would like to see his performances improve.
“I have started quite well. It is not where I want to be, but there is always room for improvement. So, obviously, I would love to score goals because I haven’t so far. But like I said, I just have to take it one game at a time and hopefully I will get back to my best form.”
Makola has a chance to start building on getting back to his best when Pirates face Polokwane City at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium tonight.
