Strauss & Co’s last auction

A DIVERSE RANGE OF ART WORKS, INCLUDING PRINTS, SCULPTURES, CERAMICS Sales of historial works from Barloworld Collection to be used to raise funds.

In November Strauss & Co present their final online auction of 2017. Divided into seven sessions, this year’s final sale on the Strauss & Co calendar has a diverse range of work, from prints and multiples to drawings and watercolours in sessions 1 and 3.

Providing depth to the sale is Session 2, especially dedicated to historical works of art from the Barloworld Collection to raise funds for the revival of the collection with contemporary art. Session 4 features paintings, with Session 5 dedicated to sculpture. In Session 6 one can find silver and jewellery; and books in Session 7.

A number of works by important international artists feature in Session 1 with Takashi Murakami, Alexander Calder, David Hockey, Joan Miro, Henry Moore and Pablo Picasso being some of the most prominent. Notable SA artists like Sam Nhlengethwa, Walter Battiss, Robert Hodgins, Andrew Vertser and Cecil Skotnes, also feature.

Highlights from the historic Barloworld Collection in Session 2 include a portrait of a Cape Dutch homestead by Edward Roworth titled Schoongezich, Christopher Tugwell’s River in a Winter Landscape, and two charming Karoo scenes by Gerard Batha, all with estimates of R20 000 – R30 000.

Carl Buchner fans should look out for his series of portraits in Session 3 estimated at R5 000 – R7 000, while Boonzaier followers will be interested in his self-portrait in mixed media (R15 000 – R20 000). Should one’s tastes for works on paper be a little more avant garde then look no further than Cecily Sash’s Wattle Fence and Tree (R20 000 – R30 000) and George Tobias’ Untitled in mixed media (R10 000 – R15 000).

Session 4 features two well observed paintings by Louise Linder (R15 000 – R20 000), as well as a richly painted portrait by Johan Louw (R25 000 – R40 000).

In Session 5 one can find a bronze titled Seated Figure by Ben Macala estimated at R15 000 – R20 000. Two abstract marble forms by Caroline van der Merwe estimated at R5 000 – 7 000 display a diversity in medium and approach, while a sculptural plaque by Edoardo Villa (R15 000 – R20 000) should pique the interest of his collectors.

Session 6 has an interesting group of oriental ceramics from the 17th to the 20th centuries, including an attractive pair of Chinese blue and white Gu Vases from the Kangxi period (R15 000 – R20 000). Collectors of early Vietnamese wares may be interested to find two unusual stoneware vessels, possibly from the Lê Dynasty in the 15th/16th century (R1 000 – R1 500). Session 6 also has a collection of local Linnware inspired from early Chinese monochrome glazes. With the holiday season in mind, we have a variety of silver pieces, from Georgian silver marrow scoops to late Victorian silver baskets, berry spoons and silver-mounted glass decanters. For theatregoers there is a single-owner collection of enamelled, ivory, brass and silver opera glasses and monoculars.

Finishing off the sale is Session 7, which features an array of art books,such as Robert Hodgins by Breda Atkinson published by Tafelberg Press in 2002 (R500 – R700) and Walter Battiss’ Limpopo published by Van Shaik in 1965 (R2 000 – R3 000).

South African and International Art and Decorative Arts opened online at 8am, Friday November 17 and runs until 8pm, Monday November 27, 2017.
