Dear Doctor My sister was diagnosed with cervical cancer. She underwent radiation therapy and lost weight. She’s now diagnosed with anaemia a er a course of radiation therapy. What can we do to help her get be er?

Answer: Firstly, the emotional support is very important. It is not easy dealing with cancer and the side-effects of the treatments, having the love and support of the family is very helpful. To assist with anaemia, the diet also plays a major role. Make sure she eats an adequate amount of vegetables, meat and fish. Make sure she sees her doctor regularly as well to have the right blood tests done to monitor her progress.

Dear Doctor What is the purpose of growth hormones?

Answer: Growth hormones are important for the growth of virtually all parts of the body, including muscles and bone, helps with the metabolism of sugar and fat and also heart function. That is the normal growth hormone produced by the pituitary gland in your body. There is however a synthetic form that is sold which needs to be prescribed by a doctor. It must only be used for the right reasons.

Dear Doctor My 50-year-old father has week knees and is struggling to walk. Every night his knees swell. What could the problem be?

Answer: There are many reasons why the knees might be problemati­c. There could be joint abnormalit­ies like inflammati­on or degenerati­ve athritis. There could also be weakness from muscle related abnormalit­ies or chronic illnesses or side-effects of medication­s he could be on. Please take your father to a doctor to be fully examined so the right treatment can be given.
