Harry just cocking a royal snoot?

-

The British newspaper The Guardian calls the reaction to the Prince Harry and Meghan Markle engagement a “warm public response”. Britons seem more interested in having an extra day off than celebrating the actual forthcoming marriage and are really not interested. Even tourist reaction was low key. One comment stated: “I’m happy for the geezer, but I don’t care”.

Although Britons downplay racial differences and turn a blind eye, one must speculate on a bi-racial marriage in a British system. Meghan is the first person of colour to marry a royal.

Her background is marred by divorces.

Her father, Thomas Markle, of Dutch-Irish descent, divorced his first wife with whom he had two children. Both these have been divorced twice, and have not had any contact with Meghan. Thomas Markle then married Doria Ragland, whom he divorced when Meghan was six years old.

Meghan was married to Trevor Engelson, a film producer, but got divorced in 2013, citing “irreconcilable differences”.

I wonder whether Harry, like his mother, is not just cocking a snoot at the British and the royals in particular.

Will the marriage last? Only time will tell.

John
