Tap O’Noth entered for the Grade 1 Cape Guineas over 1600m

- Tap O’Noth, widely regarded as the main home hope for the Grade 1 Cape Guineas over 1600m at Kenilworth on Saturday 16 December following his convincing win in the Cape Classic, has had his chances done no favours by being drawn only one from the outside.

Interestingly handicappers reckon the Vaughan Marshalltrained colt - also winner of the Langerman last season - is 4.5kg behind the top-rated entry, with no fewer than four horses above him.

Highest rated in this muchprized race is Sand And Sea, who won the Grade 1 Tsogo Sun Gold Medallion at Scottsville last season but was a big disappointment when 6-10 for his reappearance in a Kenilworth Progress Plate last month. He was found to have a severe upper respiratory tract infection.

He has also been drawn quite wide, as has the second-highest rated entry, the Sean Tarrytrained Wonderwall.

Justin Snaith has already accepted with Sir Frenchie, Do It Again (the mount of Bernard Fayd’Herbe) and Cot Campbell (jockey Grant van Niekerk), who was third in the Cape Classic.

Marshall won last year’s race with William Longsword while Joey Ramsden, successful twice in the past six years, relies on Ancestry and Talk Of The Town. However Dean Kannemeyer, who has by far the best recent record in this race, winning it five times since 2005, does not have an entry.

There is a supplementary entry stage on Wednesday and declarations fall due the following day.

Geoff Woodruff-trained Deo Juvente heads the 16 nominations for the Premier Trophy (Grade 2) over 1800m on the same Kenilworth programme. He is one of eight horses entered in this race who have also been entered for the Sun Met.

Exciting Dean Kannemeyertrained Last Winter, who is unbeaten in four starts, is also in the mix, while another notable nominee is Horizon, who was narrowly beaten into sixth in the Vodacom Durban July.

Ovidio, also entered in the Premier, has an alternative date in the Grade 3 Cape Stayers over 2500m, while last season’s Victress Stakes winner Goodtime Gal will attempt to win the Grade 3 1800m race again.

Nightingale, winner of the Klawervlei Majorca Stakes and equal fourth with Krambambuli in the Durban July, heads the weights.
