Hunt adamant Wits didn’t err signing Schillo

- Jonty Mark

Gavin Hunt insists Bidvest Wits did not make mistakes in the transfer market at the start of this season, even though the club are rooted to the bottom of the Absa Premiership and have already let Steven Pienaar leave the club just six months into his contract.

The Clever Boys have also released another new signing in Montenegrin defender Slavko Damjanovic, following a shambolic defence thus far of their league title.

Wits resume their campaign tomorrow at home to Free State Stars, as the top flight kicks off again after the Christmas break.

“You never make mistakes when you sign players,” said the Wits coach. “When you are working in the free market you never know how it will turn out.”

Hunt did describe Pienaar’s exit from the club this week as “unfortunate”.

There was plenty of hype when Pienaar signed for Wits as a free agent after ending a successful playing career in Europe. But “Schillo” made just four starts for Wits in all competitions.

“I wasn’t part of the whole agreement (to let Pienaar leave),” added Hunt. “It is just one of those things.”

Wits are trying to bulk up their squad in the January transfer window, meanwhile, with Lehlohonolo Majoro signed to bolster the striking department.

Wits have also recalled Sifiso Myeni from his loan spell at SuperSport United, while utility player Edwin Gyimah has also joined in January.

The Clever Boys have also signed three players on pre-contracts – Maritzburg United defender Denis Weidlich, Cape Town City defender Robyn Johannes and Polokwane City attacking midfielder Thobani Mncwango.

The trio are supposed to join the club from July 1, but Hunt said that Wits were negotiating to try and get them released early.

Ajax Cape Town, under new coach Muhsin Ertugral, will host Maritzburg United in tomorrow’s other Premiership game, while the plum tie of the weekend is probably SuperSport’s home game against Kaizer Chiefs in Nelspruit on Saturday.
