Afrikaans will continue to weather the storm

Mr Lesufi, you only have a political agenda to destroy Afrikaans language schools, writes

refer to Andrew Kenny’s column, “Assault on Afrikaans”, in which he describes the onslaught on Afrikaans since British colonial times. Afrikaans came out stronger than ever.

It is very disturbing that the latest onslaught is made by the honourable chief justice and judges of the ConCourt.

The chief justice has shown his true colours and does not apply every citizen’s constitutional right to “mother tongue” education in ruling in favour of the Free State University.

Now, Gauteng education MEC Panyaza Lesufi follows suit in his bid to force intergration at school level without taking into account the constitutional right to mother tongue education and freedom of association. His dream of nonsegregated pupils playing, singing and dancing together is just that – a pipe dream.

Pupils already associate with those who have the same values and interests, whether black, white, coloured or Indian. Mr Lesufi, get off your high horse and experience the goodwill and friendship between pupils of all races. You only have a political agenda to destroy Afrikaans-language schools, not withstanding the presence of many non-white pupils in the same schools.

Mr Lesufi, Afrikaans will also withstand your onslaught.
