As a spectacle it’s fine, but too few goals

- Tshepo Ntsoelengoe

The year has started brilliantly in the Absa Premiership with matches providing some scintillating moments, but goals are somehow still a concern and there are still doubts whether a striker will be able to reach at least 15 goals this season.

The current leading scorer, Polokwane City’s Rodney Ramagalela (left), has nine and last scored against Sundowns some three weeks ago. He is followed by Mamelodi Sundowns’ Percy Tau who has hit the net seven times.

Former Bafana Bafana striker, Phil Masinga feels that if we are to see a lot more goals being scored week-in and week-out in the Premiership, then the teams should stop being cautious and start attacking more.

Masinga, who had spells with Jomo Cosmos and Mamelodi Sundowns before going overseas, reckons the lack of goals in the local game is caused by the defensive style teams are employing.

“Nowadays we see strikers all over the field and spending most of their time outside the box,” said Masinga.

“I mean, if a striker is playing in crosses, who is going to put that ball in the net? I just don’t get it, there are only a few players in the PSL who actually spend most of their times inside the box.”

The likes of Jeremy Brockie of Mamelodi Sundowns and James Keene of Bidvest Wits are some of those strikers who are constantly inside the danger area because they know that is where the goals will come from.
