Pieterse: We are in a false position

WITH THE PLAYERS WE HAVE, WE CAN FIGHT He says the side have not recovered from the Confederation Cup.

Given the talent that SuperSport United boast, perhaps a lot of football brains would agree with Reyaad Pieterse when he says Matsatsantsa do not deserve to in the bottom half of the Absa Premiership.

United are struggling in 11th place, just four spots and three points ahead of Bidvest Wits, whom they face tonight at Lucas Moripe Stadium.

“We are not sitting very comfortably in the table ... with the personnel and the players we have we really do not deserve to be in that position, but there are no easy games in the PSL and we will have to bounce back,” said Pieterse.

The goalkeeper recognises that Matsatsantsa’s limp efforts in the league is down to the fact that they have not yet recovered from their gruelling 2017 Caf Confederation Cup campaign, where they reached the final only to lose over two legs to TP Mazembe. However, Pieterse promises the side will return to form pretty soon.

“We need to pull up our socks. We need to be more positive and more clinical and more structured at the back. We all need to account for what’s been going on and rectify all these things.

“I feel it takes time. This wave of events will turn around in the next few games. With the players we have, we can definitely fight. It is not going be easy, we know it is going to be a dogfight from now until the end of the season and that’s what we are preparing for,” said the 25-year-old.

Given that the Students are struggling as they fight to pull themselves out of the relegation mire, Pieterse reckons tonight will be an immense battle for full points.

“It is not going to be easy, Wits have top players and in our last encounter (Wits won 2-0 at Bidvest Stadium earlier this month) you could see that no matter where you are in the table, that is not a reflection of the team you actually are.

“Who would have thought Wits would win the league last season and be fighting relegation this season? It is a dog-eat-dog world here. Anyone can be at the top and next season they could be at the bottom.”
