Over the years I have been researching form studies done on what makes people successful. It is a hidden passion of mine because in order to become successful, you need to follow a daily routine of highly successful actions.

It is fascinating how some people have dedicated their lives to studying top CEOs to try piece together what commonalities they have, and perhaps mere mortals can replicate it and have success in their lives. The number one success habit that top CEOs have is that they exercise at least 30 minutes a day.

President Cyril Ramaphosa is one of those men who are at the moment literally walking the talk. President Ramaphosa has been cited in various locations and even the day before some of the biggest democratic changes in the country, doing his daily walking success routine.

Think about the biggest deadline that you have had to achieve, more than likely your morning gym was the one that suffered because your work was more important.

Humans are always playing devil’s advocate with themselves and self-talking themselves on why one is more important than the other. What if you changed the way you saw fitness and changed the concept to – that in order to be successful you need to put in the physical hours.

The lifestyle of a president or a CEO is anything but normal and is more than likely highly stressful.

The sports car engine produces huge amounts of power and energy but if the chassis is not built to withstand the demands of the performance, then it will simply break down.

Highly successful people operate at a higher level of performance and if they did not exercise, they would not keep up with the demands of their job and operate at the level their position demands.

Ramaphosa walks up to 10km a day because he believes in getting out and enjoying the fresh air, helps him to stay positive, creative and loves the fact that he doesn’t have to spend a cent of his net worth because it’s free. He believes that walking adds health benefits to one’s life and President Ramaphosa is absolutely correct.

The next biggest question is, how do you walk properly so that you don’t place stress on your joints and tendons, and more importantly, your muscles? Don’t get an injury while out and about.

I have put together some techniques for you to practice. It might feel awkward in the beginning but keep it correct. Your style will be poor but over time, it will feel like you are floating around your 5km walk. Also remember, if you want to burn more calories, simply pick up the pace at which you walk or find a more challenging route with mini hills.
