Lions warned to stay on full alert
COETZEE: IF WE MAKE MISTAKES THEY WILL CAPITALISE
Wounded Blues could be dangerous at Ellis Park.
Having to face their first Kiwi opposition of the year this weekend in the form of the unpredictable Blues at Ellis Park, ace Lions fullback Andries Coetzee cautioned that the team will have to be on high alert.
While the Lions are on cloud nine, unbeaten after three wins, the Blues have suffered two close losses – 41-34 to the Highlanders and 27-21 to the Chiefs.
“We know all Kiwis are excellent players especially on the counter-attack, we know if we make mistakes they will capitalise,” said Coetzee.
“We are excited but we know it will also be physical and a quick, running game as well.”
Despite starring in all 13 Bok Tests last year, Coetzee said it starts all over again now.
“Being a Bok I believe it gives you a bit of confidence to make the proper decisions, but you have to reset every year and see it as a new season with new challenges,” he said.
Being the senior partner in the back three with 60 Super Rugby caps, Coetzee said it has been a pleasure working with exciting new wingers Aphiwe Dyantyi and Sylvian Mahuza.
“They are playing good rugby. I’m used to Courtnall (Skosan) and Ruan (Combrinck), but it’s actually nice to have new faces around to challenge you,” he said.
“You try to learn stuff from them too, but it’s nice to have them around to also try and teach them stuff.”
While there’s a new Bok coach on the horizon, Coetzee’s form has been exceptional.
“I am more happy with the team’s form, but I believe if the team do well, you as an individual also play good rugby especially if the forwards set you a good platform.
“It’s been a good start but there’s still a long way to go.”
Coetzee said while the game is about the team who makes the least mistakes, they always stand by intending to score the most tries.
“And I believe if we score more tries and our discipline is on par, it will pull us through this weekend.”
