VISITOR BRINGS TOO MUCH EXCITEMENT WITH HIM
Newly married couple Max and Sam Matsane, played by actor, director and comedian Kagiso Lediga, and actress/model Pearl Thusi, have to make difficult decisions about their future while trying to cope with the challenges of the present in this tale of love and insecurity.
The dark romantic comedy follows a young academic and his beautiful wife as their lives are turned upside down when a successful and hedonistic older writer moves into their Johannesburg home with them.
Max is a 30-something author who wrote a bestseller in his 20s, but now he is a lecturer at a university. He is coming to terms with his current financial status and not being the only famous sibling in his family, as his younger brother gains stardom from a YouTube video.
He seems unsure of why he is married to a beautiful woman who is popular in Joburg’s social circles.
Sam is a devoted wife and trusted friend who is passionate about her career in journalism.
They live in an upmarket Johannesburg suburb, but Sam feels they have become too suburban and “safe” and Max is constantly lamenting the state of life.
Then a very successful and flamboyant older writer, Heiner Miller, played by Andrew Buckland, comes to do a residency in Max’s department.
He arrives he gets involved in a string of sexual escapades and alcohol-induced late night parties, which leads to a mild heart attack. Max brings Heiner into his home to recuperate.
But tensions rise as Heiner continues his wild ways under Max and Sam’s roof, putting a strain on Max and Sam’s marriage.
He draws Max into his mid-life crisis about his identity as a white man in the new South Africa. Playing the role of the friend and mediator, Joel, is actor, producer and director Akin Omotoso, who is living through his dirty 30s as a bachelor and heartbreaker.
It had a good reception overseas and even bagged a nomination for best film at the Los Angeles Film Festival last year.
