Parliament’s portfolio committee on public enterprises, which is tasked with uncovering alleged state capture at Eskom, will not be questioning the Gupta brothers or former SAA board chairperson Dudu Myeni today.

But Home Affairs Minister Malusi Gigaba has confirmed his attendance.

Both the minister’s spokesperson, Mayihlome Tshwete, and committee chairperson Zukiswa Rantho said Gigaba would appear today.

“He does not have a problem appearing before the committee. This is very good because we will be dealing with the matter once and for all. It is good that he is taking responsibility and coming through,” Rantho said.

Tshwete said: “Yes, absolutely, the minister will be in parliament tomorrow appearing before the committee.”

Gigaba dodged his previously scheduled appearance, informing the committee that he was ill.

Myeni has informed the committee that she is still ill.

However, she was spotted by City Press at a four-star hotel in Hatfield, Pretoria, at about 10.30pm last Wednesday.

“Dudu [Myeni] has sent an e-mail saying she is too ill to attend and therefore she reserves the right to be given her space.

“We will discuss the matter as the committee and see what to do.”

Joining Myeni on the absentee list are the Gupta brothers.

“The Gupta brothers have sent the committee secretary a long letter,” said Rantho.

“It is basically saying that they are outside the country and they won’t be able to attend the hearing.

“They do not specify where they are currently. We will have to discuss this matter, as well.

“[Former president Jacob Zuma’s son] Duduzane ... is also not coming.

“The committee secretary has also received a letter from Mr Zuma saying he will not be able to attend the hearing tomorrow. We will only be dealing with the minister.” –
