Harold crosses the border

AN ACTION-PACKED COMEDY FOR THE FELLOWS ‘In the search for a man, the gorilla will become the bear.’

- Kgosi Modisane Film Fact File:

Misguided by his father’s teachings on work ethics, marriage and money, Nigeria-born Harold Soyinka, played by Academy Award-winner David Oyelowo, is an operational manager for an American pharmaceutical company which is about to launch a revolutionary pill involving the use of medical marijuana.

Determined to make a success of the position given to him by his trusted friend and boss Richard Rusk (played by Joel Edgerton), alongside the ballsy yet low self-esteemed Elaine Markinson, played by South Africa-born actress and producer Charlize Theron, Harold gets wind of a rumour which leaves him feeling unsettled with regards to his future.

Uninformed of what is to happen to his career, naïve Harold joins his bosses on a work trip to their plant in Mexico where he needs to make sense of one riddle after another, each involving a gorilla and a bear.

He then discovers that his wife, played by Thandi Newton, has been having an affair and is filing for divorce.

To survive, confused Harold conjures up a plan to kidnap himself and claim a ransom from his company. Little does he know that a bounty has been placed on his head by the Mexican drug cartel and that his imagination is soon to become reality.

The film takes on a comedic persona before diving head first into a car chasing, gun popping, bullet flying action film. With each jaw-dropping scene, the viewer can look forward to helping poor old Harold fill in the blanks regarding his sham of a life.

Directed by Australia-born filmmaker and stuntman Nash Edgerton, Gringo is the perfect film for the fellows to enjoy on a night out before getting into mischief. The comedic humour will have you all in stitches.

An interesting fact is that 80% of the cast is actors who are non-American like Charlize Theron, David Oyelowo, Joel Edgerton, Thandi Newton, Sharlto Copley as well as the director himself. In fact, two of the lead characters are South African.
