Finally, Safa postpones election

-

The South African Football Association (Safa) have finally relented and postponed their elective congress, which was due to take place on Saturday.

Safa have been under constant pressure to postpone the elections, with former referee Ace Ncobo at the forefront of a campaign to remove Danny Jordaan from the Safa presidency.

It remains to be seen if Jordaan does eventually leave Safa, but Ncobo has at least achieved his initial aim, to have Saturday’s presidential elections called off.

The association said in a statement that “postponing the elections would give the new electoral committee time to thrash out all compliance matters”.

Safa also lashed out at their former vice-president Chief Mwelo Nonkonyana, who has taken the association to court in an attempt to fight his axing as vice-president and also went to the courts last week in an attempt to interdict the Safa congress, when it seemed to be going ahead.

“Individuals who take football cases to the courts of law must be reported to Fifa in line with the world football governing body and where appropriate, Safa should recommend that such individuals receive worldwide bans as per Fifa statutes,” continued the Safa statement.

“Chief Mwelo Nonkonyana, who lost his case in the courts on Tuesday, 20 March 2018, should be banned for life and that Safa should start processes to recoup all money as a result of these court cases.
