Maritzburg set to reach the heady heights

- Jonty Mark

Maritzburg United’s incredible season continues this evening, as they take on Bidvest Wits in Johannesburg, with a chance to move within two points of Mamelodi Sundowns at the top of the Absa Premiership.

The Team of Choice reached the semifinals of the Nedbank Cup on Friday evening, with a 2-1 victory over Bloemfontein Celtic that was their sixth win in seven games in all competitions.

United will now play Masandawana in the cup semfinals, but first they have a chance to put some pressure on Pitso Mosimane’s men and Orlando Pirates, with the title favourites both playing tomorrow evening.

Fadlu Davids’ (right) side are clearly outsiders in the race, but in the mood they are in, they will fancy their chances at Bidvest Stadium, even against a Wits side that have found some form in the New Year.

Gavin Hunt’s league champions were bottom of the table at Christmas, but now have a decent chance of finishing in the top six – the Clever Boys are unbeaten in the league since losing at home to Free State Stars on January 5.

Wits do, however, continue to struggle a little in front of goal, despite the efforts of striker Lehlohonolo Majoro, who has done well in patches since signing in the January transfer window.

The Clever Boys will do well to break down a United defence this evening that has conceded the joint-fewest goals in the league this season, along with Chiefs.
