Still queen of the road
VINTAGE FORD ESCORT A HIT AT ENGLAND’S RACE DAY 10-year labour of love and passion by Paolo Piazza Musso competes overseas.
Always good to hear of South African motorsport specialists who achieve notable things overseas. That is the case with the Piazza Motorsport equipe in Gauteng.
Their recreation of the 1977 Jody Scheckter/Hans Heyer Wynns 1 000 Zakspeed Ford Escort was one of many star attractions at the recent Goodwood Members Meeting in England.
The South African-built car participated in two Group 5 demonstration races at the Goodwood Motor Circuit on March 17 and 18.
The invitation to the Members Meeting resulted from the cars’ participation in the Festival of Motoring held at the Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit in September last year.
The Zakspeed Escort is the first car both based and built in South Africa to participate in the Goodwood Members Meeting.
After the event, car owner Lance Vogel received an official invitation to also attend this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed, to be held from July 12 to 15.
The car will remain in the UK for the Festival of Speed before returning to South Africa in time for the 2018 Festival of Motoring at Kyalami in early September.
The project, a 10-year labour of love and passion, was completed by Paolo Piazza Musso in 2015.
The Piazza Musso family has been involved in local motorsport for over 50 years.
“To receive an invitation to Goodwood is a great honour, especially for a car you have personally been responsible for,” said Paulo.
“The variety and quality of the other cars participating at Goodwood was amazing.
“It provided us with a great opportunity to demonstrate to the international motorsport industry that we have the local expertise and talent to compete against the best in the world” he added.
The Group 5 demonstration included various BMWs, Porsches, Ferraris, Lancias and a Chevrolet Corvette.
Also present were the Jochen Mass driven Martini Porsche 935 ‘Moby Dick’ plus a Junior Team BMW 320i that completed against the Zakspeed Escorts at the 1977 Wynns 1000 at Kyalami. –
