Address sewage, please Mr Mayor
Open letter to Herman Mashaba, the mayor of Joburg: For years now, raw sewage has been flowing in the streets of Weltevredenpark – and through my garden – when heavy rains come.
I have brought this to the municipality’s attention on numerous occasions, asking for someone to come out and assess (and fix) the root of the problem: why our drains keep getting blocked and overflow.
I have explained the problem to my ward councillor and to the executive office manager in the private office of the speaker.
I have complained about nothing being done by any of the municipal employees I have contacted.
I have complained about the fact that they blatantly ignore all attempts at following up on this matter (especially David Brand, our ward councillor).
Yet still – nothing has been done.
As I type, raw sewage still lies in our local park, 100m away from a children’s play park.
And nobody in the municipal structure seems to care.
I ask you, seriously – is this your vision of a world-class African city?
