Aberdien off to Hungary
HE DEBUTED ON THE STREET IN PAU Hungaroring track is ‘more like I am used to’ and he has driven there before.
Cape Town driver Jonathan Aberdein will head to Budapest for round two of the 2018 FIA Formula 3 European Championship at the Hungaroring this weekend.
He will be looking to step up in Hungary after a successful, if challenging, opening round at France’s Pau circuit earlier this month.
Aberdein was happy to have brought his Motopark Dallara Volkswagen home in one piece and to also score points on his street circuit debut at the demanding French season opener.
He is eagerly anticipating racing on a more conventional track in Hungary.
“My debut went well, all considered,” Jonathan said.
“Racing on a street circuit for the first time was a new experience and to have scored my first Formula 3 points in that wet final race was a bonus.
“Now I am looking forward to race on a track more like I am used to.
“We tested there earlier in the year, so I at least know which way the track goes and we can just get down to chasing a competitive set-up, rather than also navigating a steep learning curve again.
“The FIA European Formula 3 championship has to be one of the most competitive rungs in the single-seater ladder.
“It is filled with the best young racing talent out there, plus next generation racing names like Schumacher and Sato.
“They were, incidentally, the two drivers just ahead of me in the early championship race, so it would be good to leapfrog them both to come away from Budapest with a good few more points in the bag,” Aberdein added.
The Hungaroring weekend will start with free practice on Friday morning before first qualifying that afternoon.
