Pupil allegedly shot dead by dad ‘a tragic mistake’
A father has allegedly shot and killed his son outside Fred Norman Secondary School in Ennerdale after mistaking him for a hijacker.
Police said the 14-year-old boy’s death appears to be a tragic mistake.
The man was surprised when his son returned to his car after attending a study group at the school and he reacted by shooting the boy, eNCA has reported.
The man claimed he thought his son was a hijacker.
Gauteng education MEC Panyaza Lesufi visited the school yesterday to address pupils. In a tweet, Lesufi said it was “a sad day for education in our province”.
In another incident after the shooting, Lesufi said, a Grade 12 pupil at the school had been abducted and raped.
Someone called Basetsana tweeted: “Thats my friend’s brother, Themba ... it was a horrible mistake ...
“The dad dosed off in the car while waiting to pick him up. Themba opened the car while he was sleeping.
“He thought someone was trying to rob him then pulled out the gun and fired the shot. He handed himself over.”
According to police spokesperson Mpande Khoza, when the father realised what had happened, he rushed to the nearest hospital with his son, but was too late.
“The father will appear today or tomorrow in court where the prosecutor and the magistrate will decide on bail,” Khoza said.
