The Citizen (KZN)

Jonty’s picks

-

France are my pick to win the World Cup, with Didier Deschamps winning as a player in 1998, in charge of a squad full of talent.

Today, France open their Group C campaign against Australia, the outsiders in a group also containing Denmark and Peru. The Socceroos are playing in a fourth consecutive Fifa finals, but failed to get out of the group stages in either 2010 or 2014.

They have a goalkeeper, in Matthew Ryan, who is coming off a fine season with Brighton in the English Premier League, and he is probably going to have to be on his best form at the Kazan Arena, with the likes of Antoine Griezmann, Ousmane Dembele and Kylian Mbappe in the France attack.

I expect France to win this one fairly comfortably.
