Roquebrune to post a double

- Viv Greybe

Stephanie Miller-trained seventime winner Roquebrune has a bright chance to make it five wins at Flamingo Park today when teaming up with Ryan Munger in Race 4, a Pinnacle Stakes over 1000m.

Munger was aboard this son of Var four runs back when he streaked home a 7.25-length winner of the Kimberley 1400. The gelding was unplaced but not disgraced in his next outing over 1200m at the Vaal where he stumbled out of the starting stalls and then was rushed into the lead before weakening late.

Partnered by Munger once more, this five-year-old disappointed next time when sent off favourite at Flamingo Park where he faded out in a 1400m Pinnacle Stakes. However, relishing the step down in distance in his subsequent outing he proved too good for his 12 rivals, scoring decisively by 4.25 lengths with Lukas Bester aboard in a Pinnacle contest.

Returning refreshed after a short rest, the gelding will be tough to beat as he will be carrying 60kg once more against similar opposition.

Do not hastily dismiss Corrie Lensley-trained seven-time winner Rock A Bye Baby (Muzi Yeni) after an indifferent last run when ridden by Evert Pfeiffer for the first time and finishing well down the field in a Pinnacle Stakes won by Roquebrune.

Yeni has a fine association with the four-year-old, winning five times and unplaced only once in nine starts – the last of which was a 6.5-length second to Roquebrune (received 6.5kg) in the 1200m Flamingo Sprint. The finish should be close this time when Rock A Bye Baby receives 4kg from Roquebrune.

However, both will have to watch out for Sarel von Willingh Smit’s five-time winner Bletchley with Francois Herholdt up.
