Roger Varian and Kaanoon favoured to claim Yarmouth cash

Catterick (UK) Wed Race 1: 15.10

- London

– Kaanoon can continue his progression today in the Moulton Nurseries Of Acle Handicap at Yarmouth.

Roger Varian's three-year-old is perfectly placed to take advantage of the weight-for-age scale at this time of year.

After a promising enough debut at Kempton in May when fourth of 10, he broke his maiden next time at Wolverhampton, scraping home by a nose.

He beat two previous winners that day, so it looked pretty obvious he was going to be above average himself and proved that next time out at Windsor.

Sent off favourite in a novice race and conceding weight to all bar one of his 13 rivals, he barely came off the bridle looking a cut above the opposition.

His rating of 89 seems fair, he is taking on older, more exposed horses, and the likelihood is Kaanoon is still progressing.

Mick Channon's Rippling Waters began life in bumpers but, after two disappointing efforts, had her attentions switched to the Flat.

She has already shown that she is well capable of winning a race on the level and after three respectable runs, has earned a rating of 75.

The best of those came at Lingfield when she was second on the turf and she returns there for the Play Live Roulette At 188Bet Casino Novice Median Auction Stakes which looks a good opportunity before she goes handicapping.

Mark Johnston's Prairie Spy is giving lumps of weight away in the St Teresa's Hospice Fillies' Nursery Handicap at Catterick but she should be up to it.

A winner over 1200m on debut at Thirsk, she then went to Bath over 1100m and the drop in trip nearly caught her out.

The ground was very fast there, though, and she was giving weight away to nearly all, so the fact she was off the bridle early is excusable.

On a kinder surface, up in trip slightly and against inferior rivals, she can remain unbeaten.

Andrew Balding's Firelight made a pleasing debut at Sandown and this well-bred filly can take a big step forward in the 32Red/British Stallion Studs EBF Fillies' Novice Stakes at Kempton.

From the family of John Gosden's smart stayer Face The Facts, she is by Oasis Dream out of a Galileo mare so the 1000m first time out was probably a bit sharp and now over 1200m she should be seen in better light.

The best bet at Bath looks to be William Haggas' Cosmic Love, who, having opened her account at the fifth time of asking, should be full of confidence for the Westonbirt Handicap. – Press Association
