Jonty’s picks

-

England and Belgium will meet this evening at the 2018 Fifa World Cup for the second time and for the second time it will be a game that can be described as rather meaningless.

They faced each other in the group stages with progress to the last-16 already secured and both Roberto Martinez and Gareth Southgate fielded reserve teams, with the impression given that neither side minded losing as it dropped them into the easier half of the draw.

As it was, Belgium won 1-0 and both sides ended up going out in the semifinals, hence their meeting today in the third-place play-off – which has to be one of the most undesired contests in the whole of the beautiful game.

England and Belgium may well field weakened teams again, though both Harry Kane and Romelu Lukaku may play with the Golden Boot for the tournament’s top scorer up for grabs.

It is hard to pick a winner in the game no-one wants to play and I will go for a draw at the end of normal time. Pool Name - S6 V2 P1 M1: Belgium v England. Previewed above.
