Underdogs Sharks to give it a go

- Ken Borland

While most South African Super Rugby hopes will be focused on Johannesburg and the Lions’ quarterfinal against the Jaguares, the Sharks have named an unchanged team for their match against the Crusaders in Christchurch and are full of belief that they can shock the defending champions.

“It’s been all good since we arrived and the boys did really well last weekend against the Jaguares so we wanted to keep that continuity. We like playing against the Kiwi teams, it has brought the best out of our side in the past.

“We know we are up against a formidable side who are playing really good rugby, but it’s a one-off game and we are going to give it our best shot,” Sharks coach Robert du Preez said yesterday.

Assistant coach Dick Muir backed up the former Springbok scrumhalf’s sentiments.

“There’s a lot of excitement, the team had a long haul getting to Christchurch, but everyone is in good spirits. We’re coming off a good win and the team is ready to have a go. They have the players, but our expectations are pretty high as we get to the business end of the competition. Not too many people are giving us a chance, so it’s a great opportunity to prove them wrong,” Muir said.

While chances are Sharks fans will not be chugging triumphant beers in their local hostelry after the match tomorrow morning (9.35am) South African time, whatever the result, veteran prop Tendai Mtawarira will still have another landmark to celebrate – his 150th cap for the Sharks.

The 33-year-old holds the record for the most Super Rugby appearances for a single franchise and Du Preez paid tribute to his loosehead colossus.

“Beast has been fantastic for us and his record speaks for itself. He’s an inspiration and has unbelievable leadership skills as well as playing great rugby this year. He’ll be keen to play well and celebrate his 150th cap,” Du Preez said.
