Twin success for Anderson
South Africa’s fourth-seeded Kevin Anderson (above) reached the quarterfinals of the Rogers Cup in Toronto, after a thirdround win over Ilya Ivashka of Belarus 7-5, 6-3 on Thursday.
Wimbledon runner-up Anderson will now meet fifth-seed Grigor Dimitrov in the last-eight.
Dimitrov also had a successful day in beating American Frances Tiafoe 7-6, 3-6, 7-6.
Meanwhile, there was further good news as Anderson and his partner Novak Djokovic reached the quarterfinals in the doubles.
The duo, who contested last month’s Wimbledon men’s singles final, knocked out defending champions Nicolas Mahut and Pierre-Hugues Herbert of France.
Anderson and Djokovic lost the first set 6-4, before winning the second 6-4. They then won the deciding match tie-break 10-7.
But Djokovic had no joy in the singles when Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas beat him 6-3, 6-7, 6-3.
Meanwhile, Raven Klaasen and Kiwi Michael Venus are on track to qualify for the season-ending ATP World Tour Finals in London at the end of the year.
Klaasen and Venus beat Lukasz Kubot and Marcelo Melo 6-3, 5-7, 11-9 on Thursday and later eased through to the quarterfinals with a 7-6, 6-3 win over Spaniards Feliciano Lopez and Marc Lopez.
They were set for a re-match with Wimbledon conquerors Mike Bryan and Jack Sock. – ANA
