50 not out for SA’s Erasmus

-

Cricket South Africa (CSA) yesterday congratulated umpire Marais Erasmus (above) on achieving the milestone of 50 Test matches when he took the field on the first day of the second Test between England and India at the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground in London.

He is the 17th umpire to reach this landmark and the second South African after Rudi Koertzen, who went on on to officiate in 108 Tests. The West Indies’ Steve Bucknor holds the record for the most Tests after retiring with 128 matches behind his name.

“He is renowned not just for his accurate decision-making but probably even more so for the calm demeanour he brings to ensure the smooth running of the game. He is a wonderful role model for the umpiring community, not just in South Africa, but around the world,” CSA CEO Thabang Moroe said yesterday.

Erasmus said he was humbled by reaching the milestone.

“I still remember my days as a first-class cricketer representing Boland and how I took to umpiring, which in hindsight was a very good decision,” he said.

“The long journey would not have been possible but for the support of my family. I’m very indebted to my family, especially my wife Adéle, for the support throughout my umpiring career.”

After the entire first day’s play was washed out on Thursday, England only bowled 35.2 overs yesterday due to rain delays.
