Gould knows what it takes

– If there are players who know how to win cup finals, Morgan Gould (above) should be counted among those, having won eight trophies in his career so far.

The veteran SuperSport United defender hopes to get yet another medal when they meet Cape Town City in the MTN8 final at Durban’s Moses Mabhida Stadium tonight.

Speaking to the media this week, Gould dished out some sound advice for his teammates, saying if they think their recent good run stands them a better chance, they would be deluding themselves.

“This is a cup final, recent form counts for nothing. I’ve learnt that what you were today in football you may not be tomorrow. It’s one of those things determined by who keeps their nerve and who wants it more,” said Gould.

The best a team can do in a final is throw caution to the winds, he said.

“You just need to give your best knowing that the other team is going to do the same. They’re not going to hold back, and we won’t hold back. It’s one of those games where City want to get one over us and we just want to retain the cup,” said the 35-year-old.

Matsatsantsa a Pitori beat City in the same final last year and Gould wants a repeat.

But it might not be as pundits have tipped Benni McCarthy’s team to get their revenge and be the champions this time around. City have been in top form and passed what was perhaps their big test in the MTN8 when they knocked out Sundowns to reach the final.

McCarthy jokes that he has to win this one to avoid the possibility of his chairman John Comittis rethinking his decision to hire him.

“In the first one, I was only a month into coaching. So, I had no chance of getting fired if I lost. It is different now. There is a chance the chairman aims a shotgun at me if we don’t get over the line this time,” he said.
