In the world of food and lifestyle Jacques Erasmus is an exciting enigma. Since he opened Hemelhuijs in Cape Town in 2010, the restaurant has become one of the city’s most popular dining spots.
A few years on, Hemelhuijs’s homeware has become equally popular (like their range of preserves, charcoal salts, serviettes and other items).
Now these deluxe items are available again in Johannesburg at So Yum in Hyde Park Corner, which focuses mostly on Hemelhuijs’s homeware.
The homeware collection is beautiful and inviting – all of which Erasmus is known for. His obsession for aesthetic and quality craftsmanship has always translated into unique items that make whatever is being served on them pop. But owning one of the pieces is also an investment.
The Hemelhuijs Home Collection features on the table at So Yum with gold ceramic spoons and black salt. Hemelhuijs’ So Yum breakfasts are served on Hemelhuijs’ original Sepia Collection stoneware crockery, which is available from the store.
The shelves in the corner dedicated to these wares are piled with other ranges such as Hemelhuijs’ Bone Collection, Gold Collection and Boerendelft. “In addition to our basic collection, we have evolved collections, which are more inspired by seasonality and the restaurants’ thematic and aesthetic transformations,” says Erasmus.
This tableware collection is minimalistic. Inspired by matt tones of slaked lime and bleached bone, it’s finished with a clear glaze.
This charming collection of one-of-akind pieces is inspired by a charger plate recovered from an 18th century ship wreck. Boerendelft SoYum is located at Shop 24, Middle Mall, Hyde Park Corner can be translated as “peasant” delft and was traditionally created using earthenware as the clay body.
This limited edition of the bone collection is finished with gold.
A specially designed limited-edition iteration of a series of Hemelhuijs’ collaborations with ceramicist Ella Lou O’Meara celebrates the Asian flavour of Hemelhuijs and So Yum. She handpainted blue-and-white abstract Asian-inflected designs on oversized tobacco jars. This range complements a series of large vessels she and Hemelhuijs produced in Cape Town combining floral illustrations with contemporary mythology, mixing the scientific and fantastical.
